World Egg Day: Experts at UVAS call for creating awareness about nutritional value of egg

LAHORE (14-10-16): The Department of Poultry Production of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore in collaboration with the Pakistan Poultry Association (PPA) observed “World Egg Day” in a befitting manner on Friday.

Various activities, including a seminar, a walk and egg dishes and egg shell model making contests, funny skits and poetry recitation, were organised to create awareness about the nutritional value of egg and its importance for the growth of human body.



PPA Northern Zone Chairman Dr Abdul Karim Bhatti presided over the seminar while Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Talat Naseer Pasha, Rai Mansab Ali Kharl, Dean Faculty of Animal Production and Technology Prof Dr Anjum Khalique, Dr Mustafa Kammal, Chairman Department of Poultry Production Prof Dr Athar Mahmood and a large number of poultry industry representatives, UVAS faculty members and students attended.

In his address, Dr Abdul Kareem Bhatti said that eggs have a vital role in feeding people around the world, both developed and developing countries. He said that egg is an important source of nutrients, containing all of the proteins, lipids, vitamins, minerals and growth factors required by the developing embryo. He said that it protects humans against bacterial and viral infections. He said that the PPA with the help of the Punjab government wants to launch a healthy nutrition programme to eradicate malnutrition issues in the country.

Vice-Chancellor Meritorious Prof Dr Talat Naseer Pasha said that egg is an excellent and affordable source of high quality protein, with the potential to feed the world. “We need to create awareness among consumers about nutritional value and importance of egg,” Prof Pasha said and suggested that children can be provided an egg a day to attract them to schools and improve their health and solve issue of malnutrition.” The UVAS is working with poultry industry to address the malnutrition issues. He said that the UVAS has replaced the soda cold drinks with its own flavoured pure milk on its Ravi and City campuses to promote consumption of healthy drinks.

Dean Prof Dr Anjum Khalique said that this is the unique opportunity to raise awareness about the benefits of egg and its important role in life. Prof Dr Athar Mahmood gave a presentation on importance of egg for a healthy nation and the importance of protein in human diet.

Later, the Vice-Chancellor along with Dr Abdul Kareem Bhatti led a walk starting from in front of UVAS main lawn and culminating in front of the VC office after taking a round of the campus. Earlier,
In egg dishes contest, Samia Tariq won first position, Zara Tariq got 2nd and Naveen Arshad 3rd position. In Egg shell model making competition, Ali Rehman Sadiq won first position, Fayaz Ahmad 2nd and Hayan Rana 3rd position. Prof Pasha, Dr Abdul Kareem Bhatti and Rai Mansab Kharl distributed cash prizes among egg shell model and egg dishes contest winners.
